Ronald Machtley and Bill Smith will drink from the coveted chalice again this week.
The Northeast Conference will award the Brenda Weare Commissioner’s Cup at its annual spring meetings banquet Thursday evening, and for the second consecutive year, Bryant will be the recipient.
The Bulldogs, who captured the NEC Men’s Commissioner’s Cup in addition to the overall honor, won conference titles in four sports – men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf and men’s lacrosse — en-route to accumulating 205.53 points. Bryant also won the baseball regular season title and shared the women’s basketball regular season crown.
“Their success is a tribute to the leadership of President Ron Machtley and Athletic Director Bill Smith, and the hard work and dedication of their coaches and student-athletes,” said NEC Commissioner Noreen Morris.
Sacred Heart won the race for the Joan Martin Women’s Commissioner’s Cup, securing the accolade for an unprecedented eighth occasion. The Pioneers, whose 184.58 total points were second to Bryant in the overall standings, won six straight women’s Cups from 2006-12.
With 107.64 points, the Pioneers edged out LIU Brooklyn (105.81) and Central Connecticut (105.48) for the 2015 honor. It would not have been possible had SHU’s cross country/track & field programs not achieved the rare “Triple Crown” feat. After earning the team title at the NEC XC Championships this past fall, Sacred Heart proceeded to top the team standings at both the indoor and outdoor championship meets.
