One more win will do it. Bryant has two regular season women’s lacrosse games remaining, and a victory in either one will cement the Bulldogs’ right to host the 2014 NEC Tournament. Currently undefeated in league play (5-0), Bryant will visit LIU Brooklyn on April 25 (watch on NEC Front Row) before hosting Sacred Heart on April 27. Read more.

Bryant

The Bulldogs look to bounce back from last Saturday’s NEC loss to Saint Joseph’s when they host league foe Mount St. Mary’s on April 12. Bryant, which had won seven games in a row, dropped a 9-7 decision in Philadelphia and slipped down to No. 15 in the Inside Lacrosse National Top 20 Poll. Mike Pressler’s team has defeated three top-20 teams this season and leads the nation in faceoff winning percentage. Watch Bryant vs. the Mount live on NEC Front Row, Saturday at 1:00 pm. Central Connecticut

CCSU will face the defending NEC baseball champion in Smithfield this weekend. After opening conference play with a series split against Mount St. Mary’s in New Britain, the Blue Devils will contest a four-game set against Bryant. Central picked up a mid-week win over Patriot League member Holy Cross on Tuesday thanks to an all-around effort from senior Josh Ingham, who had three hits, drove in two runs and picked up the save on the mound. CCSU has now defeated teams from the Big East, American Athletic, MAAC, MEAC, America East and Patriot League. Read more.

Fairleigh Dickinson

The Knights are taking aim at a third NCAA bowling title this week in Wickliffe, OH. One of eight teams in the running for a national championship, Fairleigh Dickinson will participate in seven seeding matches on Thursday before contesting the double-elimination bracket on Friday and Saturday. LIU Brooklyn

Brittany Hart and John Ziznewski received some well-deserved recognition this week. For the second year in a row, Hart, a junior on the women’s bowling team, earned a NTCA All-America Honorable Mention. She led LIU to a 68-58 overall record and also picked up a second straight all-NEC second team honor. Read more. … Meanwhile, Ziznewski, who was named the NEC Baseball Player of the Week this past Monday, won the Corvias/ECAC Baseball Player of the Week award for NCAA DIvision I in the Metro-Upstate Region. He hit .611 with 11 RBI in five games. Read more.

Mount St. Mary’s

The Mount will continue its prep for the 2014 NEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the George Mason Spring Invitational. Freshman Julian Woods has a chance to improve upon his second-place standing on the NEC 400m hurdles performance list, while junior Heather Juhring can add to her league lead in the javelin. Robert Morris

The Colonials will take a short break from conference play for a trip to South Bend. Robert Morris will go up against No. 9 Notre Dame in a men’s lacrosse match for the first time in program history. The Colonials and Irish will face off at 1:00 pm on April 12. Read more.

Sacred Heart

In a tune-up for its NEC weekend against Bryant and Robert Morris, Sacred Heart blanked MAAC member Quinnipiac in softball on Thursday. Pitcher Anna Mallory held the Bobcats to just one hit over four innings of work to pick up the win and kick off a nine-game home stand. Read more.

 

Saint Francis

Saint Francis University women’s basketball assistant coach La’Tavia Rorie has a tremendous opportunity awaiting her this spring. Rorie was named a recipient of the UPLIFT Registration Scholarship sponsored by the NCAA. The scholarship covers the cost of registration for A Step Up Fort Lauderdale 2014, the professional development symposium for basketball assistant coaches, which will be held May 2-4 at the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina. St. Francis Brooklyn

Prepping for the NEC Championships, which will unfold in Daytona Beach the first weekend in May, St. Francis Brooklyn men’s golf competed at the Seahawk Invitational. Fellow NEC member Wagner hosted the event at the Quail Valley Golf Club in Littlestown, PA on April 7-8. The Terriers, along with LIU Brooklyn, host Wagner, Saint Francis University, and Fairfield University made up the five-team field. Read more.

While modest and unassuming off the field, the tenacious and productive play of Shea Gegan has taken the nation by storm. Through 11 games, the sophomore midfielder ranks No. 1 among all Division I women’s lacrosse players at 3.45 caused turnovers per game while her average of 3.55 ground balls per game ranks No. 2 nationally. Led by Gegan, the Seahawks are No. 1 nationally in caused turnovers per game (14.00) and No. 4 in ground balls per outing at 21.91. Read more.

Bryant

The defending NEC champions have a bye during the opening week of conference play, but Steve Owens’ Bulldogs won’t just lie around this weekend. While the six other league members open the NEC schedule, Bryant will contest the Dodd Stadium College Baseball Classic. The Bulldogs, who hope to return to Dodd in late May for the NEC Tournament, will go up against fellow regional powers UConn and Stony Brook on April 4-6. All three baseball programs have won games in the NCAA tournament over the course of the last two seasons. Bryant and UConn are the only teams from New England to have done so in 2013. Read more.

Central Connecticut

So far, so good for the defending NEC softball champs. The Blue Devils, who are 2-0 in conference play and will play four more league games this weekend, moved to 13-9 overall with a mid-week thumping of Patriot League member Holy Cross. Three Blue Devils went yard in Wednesday’s 8-1 victory, including a grand slam in the bottom of the second from sophomore Evie Rentzel. Read more.

Fairleigh Dickinson

The Knights are headed to the NCAA Bowling Championship for the 10th time in 11 years, and senior Michelle Hunzaker is thrilled to get one more shot at a national title. Fairleigh Dickinson, which ranked fifth overall in the most-recent edition of the NTCA Top 20 National Poll, is one of eight teams still standing this season. As FDU preps to make a run at what would be a third national crown, Hunzaker took some time to sit down and chat about the season as a featured guest in the NEC’s GEICO Google Hangout series. LIU Brooklyn

It was their final tune-up prior to the start of conference play, and the Blackbirds flew to an 11-5 win over MAAC member Saint Peter’s. Senior outfielder Pete Leonello, who is batting .352 this season, connected on a pair of two-baggers and became LIU Brooklyn’s all-time career doubles (43) leader in the process. Leonello and the Blackbirds will host Verrazano Bridge rival Wagner in a four-game NEC set this weekend (Apr. 4-6). Read more.

Robert Morris

The Final Four is in North Texas this weekend, and Robert Morris senior guard Karvel Anderson will be there. The 2014 #NECMBB Player of the Year earned an invitation to compete in the Reese’s Division I College All-Star Game Friday, April 4, at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Anderson, an Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention, is one of 10 players to make up the Reese’s East All-Star Team, which will be coached by Mark Turgeon of the University of Maryland. Sacred Heart

The focus has already turned to the 2014 season, which will kick off on August 30 against Marist, but Sacred Heart quarterback RJ Noel recently had the chance to celebrate what was a remarkable 2013 campaign. Noel, the 2013 all-NEC first team quarterback for the conference champion Pioneers, was named ECAC Rookie of the Year on March 27 at the annual Eastern College Athletic Conference Banquet held at Metlife Stadium in New Jersey. In his first season starting under center, Noel led the Pioneers to the program’s second Northeast Conference Championship and the Pioneers first-ever berth into the FCS Playoffs. Read more.

First, they swept Keystone State rival Robert Morris in their first NEC series of the season. Next, Saint Francis U softball went out and topped Big Ten member Penn State in the first half of a mid-week double header. The Red Flash are now 18-9 overall and will put their 2-0 NEC mark on the line against Fairleigh Dickinson this weekend. SFU hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on April 6. Read more.

 

St. Francis Brooklyn

He was a St. Francis Terrier during his undergraduate days, and, now, one-half century later, Dick Bavetta has become the “Ironman” of National Basketball Association (NBA) officials. The 1962 graduate of St. Francis Brooklyn began officiating NBA games in 1975 and has worked 2,633 consecutive regular season games. Read more.

Wagner

The Seahawks sank Delaware State in a non-conference clash, but now, the games will begin to really count. Wagner will open its NEC women’s lacrosse schedule against Bryant on April 4 on Hameline Field. Two days, later, the Seahawks will host conference foe Central Connecticut. Under the direction of rookie head coach Liz Frisoli, Wagner posted non-league wins over Del St., Manhattan, Fresno State and Stetson. Read more.
