The Matchup:  Sacred Heart has to be thinking about the possibility of a NEC title after winning six of the season’s first seven games.  With their lone loss coming in conference play, however, the Pioneers have little margin for error.  The stakes are high for Saturday’s conference contest against Bryant in Smithfield. The Bulldogs, who are coming off a Week 7 loss to Ivy League member Brown, are 1-0 in NEC play.  They opened their conference slate with a convincing road win over defending champion Wagner, which went on to hand SHU a 23-20 loss one week later. Rookie quarterback RJ Noel’s rapid progression is one reason why Sacred Heart is averaging a conference-best 40.1 points per contest. With Bryant’s vertical passing attack, there could be a lot of scoring in store for this one.  Bulldog receiver Jordan Harris made three receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns in last year’s meeting, a 34-14 win for Bryant.

The Matchup:  The annual Steel City Showdown has always generated a buzz in football-crazed Pittsburgh, but in recent years it has become even more meaningful.  When Duquesne joined the NEC in 2008, there became more than just bragging rights at stake.  The Dukes opened league play last week with a 34-7 home win over preseason favorite Wagner.  The Colonials, who were idle in Week 7, will open their league schedule before what should be a rabid Homecoming crowd at Joe Walton Stadium.  With both teams’ rosters flooded with western Pennsylvania bred talent, emotions will be running high.  Robert Morris quarterback Paul Jones, a Penn State transfer who is from nearby McKees Rocks, won’t have an easy task going up against a swarming Duquesne defense.  The Dukes’ defense and special teams have scored more than the opposing offenses have over the course of the team’s last two victories.
