NEC News of the Day: Coaching Change at Saint Francis (PA) Plus Top Tweets Are Back & So Are NEC Tennis Championships

Another coaching vacancy arose in the Northeast Conference overnight when Saint Francis (PA) announced it had accepted the resignation of men’s basketball head coach Don Friday.

A tireless worker with an obvious passion for the game, Friday attempted to turn things around in Loretto.  He led the Red Flash to back-to-back postseason appearances in 2010 and 2011 as they qualified for the eight-team NEC Tournament, but compiled a 32-86 record in the process.

Saint Francis (PA) will be a busy place over the next couple of months as the Red Flash will have to find head coaches for both their men’s and women’s basketball programs.  Following five successful years, Susan Robinson Fruchtl resigned her position in Loretto to take the head job at Big East member Providence.

Here’s the official Press Release issued by SFU Athletics on Wednesday evening.

LORETTO, Pa. (April 18, 2012) – Saint Francis University head men’s basketball coach Don Friday has resigned after four seasons, Director of Athletics Bob Krimmel announced on Wednesday evening.

“I want to thank Don for his service to Saint Francis and especially to our men’s basketball program,” said Krimmel.  “He is passionate about the game and brought his energy to work every day.  The Red Flash Family wishes him every success as he moves forward to new opportunities in his life.”

Friday was named the 20th head coach in program history on May 14, 2008, succeeding Bobby Jones.  During his four seasons in Loretto he compiled a 32-86 record and guided his teams to back-to-back Northeast Conference postseason berths in 2009-10 and 2010-11.

Associate head coach Rob Krimmel, who recently completed his 12th season on the Red Flash staff, will assume responsibility for the program’s day-to-day operations.
