NEC WBB Champion Sacred Heart Snags 13 Seed in NCAA Tournament

Next stop: Chapel Hill.  Sacred Heart will be headed to Tar Heel Country to take on No. 4 seed Georgia Tech in the NCAA Women’s Basketball First Round.

The Pioneers, who are the No. 13 seed in the Des Moines Region, will face the ACC member on March 18 in a game that tips off at 2:50 pm and can be seen live on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com.

SHU will be making its third NCAA appearance since 2006 and can become the first-ever NEC team to post a victory in the championship tournament.

In other postseason news, Robert Morris accepted a bid into the Women’s Basketball Invitational (WBI).  The Colonials (18-13), who bowed out in the NEC semifinal round in a 61-56 decision at Sacred Heart, will take on head coach Sal Buscaglia’s old team. RMU visits Manhattan (MAAC) on Wednesday, March 14.  Two-time all-NEC forward Artemis Spanou, the league’s regular season rebounding champion, and the Colonials will be the second NEC team in as many seasons to face the Lady J’s in a WBI game.  Sacred Heart traveled to Riverdale to open th 16-team bracket in 2011.
