ENCORE IN BROOKLYN: Robert Morris, LIU Take Center Stage on NEC Championship Wednesday

It’s Wednesday during Championship Week and that means none other than the Northeast Conference men’s basketball title tilt on the Deuce (ESPN2).

For the second consecutive season, LIU Brooklyn will host Robert Morris in the on-campus Wellness, Recreation, & Athletic Center (WRAC) with a bid to the Big Dance there for the taking.

It’s Robert Morris’ fourth consecutive trip to the title tilt, and second under second-year head coach Andy Toole who was a top lieutenant for Mike Rice (now at Rutgers).

Meanwhile, Jim Ferry and the Blackbirds are in search of a second consecutive conference crown and they tout an arsenal that features the 2012 NEC Player of the Year (PF Julian Boyd) and the 2011 NEC Tournament MVP (SF Jamal Olasewere).

The game will have its share of star guards, too.  LIU sophomore point man Jason Brickman (7.2 apg) ranks fifth amongst the NCAA assists leaders.

Robert Morris junior Velton Jones is the quintessential team leader with a will to win second to none.  He has risen to the occasion on the big stage before. Remember this shot in the 2011 semifinal at Quinnipiac?

Overtime! had a chance to speak with Andy Toole a few days after RMU’s run ended last March and he had this to say on his tough-as-nails guard from Philly…

“He [Velton Jones] was an absolute warrior during the NEC Tournament.  He played with a determination that was special to watch. It seemed every time we needed a big play he was involved.”

See what both the Colonials and Blackbirds had to say in anticipation of Wednesday night’s heavyweight bout…

Tournament Tweet of the Day (Mar. 6)
@hEy_m0lly – I’m so anxious for the game tomorrow

This RMU junior and avid #RMCMB supporter didn’t use her 140-character limit, but was able to get her point across quite clearly.  We know not to bother her between the hours of 7 and 9 pm on Wednesday evening as she’ll be on the edge of her seat in front of TV playing ESPN2 somewhere.

This Ashland Ave. shot of the WRAC was submitted by a member of Bobcat Nation (We can make an album just on the photos these guys submitted alone!), which has unquestionably been the top Twit-picing fan contingent of the Tournament thus far, prior to Sunday night’s semifinal.  The NEC title will once again be decided at the seven-year old facility that sits on the corner of Dekalb and Ashland Avenues when ESPN2 comes to Brooklyn on Wednesday night.
