Fasten Those Seat Belts, This Ride Promises to Get Even Better

It’s only one third of the way through, but the 2012 NEC Basketball Tournament is already one for the record books.

The Robert Morris women took their turn handing in an historic performance on Saturday night at the Sewall Center.  On the strength of double-doubles by Josette Campbell, Mary Durojaye, and Artemis Spanou as well as 27 points from Bri Tye, the Colonials put up 92 points on Saint Francis (PA) in a 10-point quarterfinal round triumph.

The scoring total matched the 26-year NEC Tournament single-game high, which has been thrice reached over the years with Monmouth being the last to do so in 1994.

RMU’s women’s performance came on the same floor where two nights earlier Coron Williams buried an Tournament record eight three-pointers and the Colonials finished with a single-game high 16 triples.

Then, there was LIU Brooklyn point guard Jason Brickman.  The soft-spoken guard accounted for 13 assists,  the most in 31 years of NEC Men’s Tournament play, as the defending champion Blackbirds got by Sacred Heart and NEC scoring champ Shane Gibson.

It’s certainly been a memorable one thus far, but after glancing at Sunday’s semifinal matchups, one has to think the best is yet to come.
