NEC News of the Day: Hardwood Should Be Hot Tonight Plus Top Tweets, Articles Links & more

With #RivalryWeek in the rear-view and the regular season ticking away, all 12 Northeast Conference men’s hoops teams return to the hardwood Thursday night.

Each team has only four more games to improve its positioning for the postseason.  Only eight teams will qualify for the 2012 NEC Tournament, the winner of which will receive an automatic bid to the Big Dance.

Central Connecticut (7-7), Sacred Heart (7-7), and Monmouth (7-7) would be the last three teams in if the postseason began today, but have yet to clinch.  The two teams chasing the last few spots – Mount St. Mary’s and Saint Francis (PA) – have little margin for error as they hold 4-10 records.

LIU Brooklyn (13-1), Wagner (12-2), St. Francis (NY) (10-4), and Robert Morris (10-4) have all clinched but are looking to hold onto their Top 4 status.  The first four finishers in the league standings will have the chance to host a NEC Tournament quarterfinal game. To that end, Quinnipiac (8-6), which could clinch a postseason berth with a win over first-place LIU on Feb. 18, hopes that it can move up one line from fifth to fourth.
