First-place Clashes All Around NEC plus Midnight Madness Links, Tweet of the Day & Other News

The excitement started on the pitch Friday night, and it’s almost certain to carry over onto the gridiron Saturday afternoon.

Fairleigh Dickinson men’s soccer had a chance to claim the driver’s seat in the race for its first NEC regular season crown since 2004, but Garden State rival Monmouth pulled out a 1-0 victory in double overtime under the lights in Teaneck.  The Knights are now 3-1-1 in league play with the Hawks at 3-1.

FDU head coach Seth Roland comments following his team’s first NEC loss…

They’ll be a battle for first in NEC football today when defending NEC champion Robert Morris visits UAlbany, a winner of three straight.  Both teams are 2-0 in conference play and stand as the lone remaining NEC unbeatens.

There was also a first-place showdown in women’s soccer yesterday with Monmouth getting the short end of this one.  After Monmouth sophomore Dana Costello tied the game in the 82nd minute, defending NEC champion Saint Francis (PA) won it in the 85th minute on a goal by reigning NEC Player of the Year.

“We did not play our best today,” stated MU head coach Krissy Turner following the team’s first NEC defeat this season. “But credit has to go to Saint Francis for creating a lot of pressure around the ball.”

Midnight Madness also hit the NEC College Basketball Landscape last night.  Here’s a photo from the Quinnipiac Chronicle…
