It’s only October and the Northeast Conference Men’s Golf Championship is still seven months away, but Sacred Heart looks ready to defend the team title it captured this past spring.
The Pioneers added another team championship to their resume on Tuesday afternoon by topping the 16-team field at the UConn-hosted Connecticut Cup.
Sacred Heart built a four-stroke lead over runner-up Rhode Island following the first two rounds and did just enough in Round 3 to hold on for a one-stroke victory.
Joseph Serrantino (70-72-75-217), Leo Garcia, (72-73-73-218), and Josh Salah (75-67-81-223), all three of whom were all-NEC selections this past spring, were the Pioneers’ top-three finishers at the Connecticut Cup.
Salah shot a 67 on Monday afternoon and that score held up as the low round of the entire tournament.
In addition to Sacred Heart, two NEC members contested the three-round competition. Central Connecticut took ninth place in the team standings, while Long Island finished in the 13th spot.
