Amidst the Homecoming celebrations, end zone embraces, and goal-scoring festivities that are the norm for a fall weekend on campus, the Northeast Conference was blindsided by a heavy dose of reality.
The reality of the fragility of life itself.
Sacred Heart alumnus, and former men’s basketball player, Chauncey Hardy passed away on Sunday.
Pursuing his dream of playing professional basketball in Romania, Hardy was out celebrating his team’s victory from earlier in the day when he became involved in an altercation.
The injuries he suffered from that incident were enough to take the life of this 23-year old young man who SHU athletic director Don Cook labeled as “always a gentleman.”
Sacred Heart student-athletes accounted for a number of reasons to celebrate this past weekend.
SHU field hockey notched its first NEC win. The women’s soccer team shutout Bryant. And the gridders defeated Columbia.
But despite all those wins, the weekend will unfortunately always be known for one huge loss.
Chauncey Hardy you will be missed and may you rest in peace.
