NEC News of the Day: Community Service Can’t Stop Red Flash from Setting Record plus your daily links, tweets & more…

The crowd at DeGol Field for last Saturday night’s football rivalry game between Duquesne and Saint Francis (PA) broke the facility’s attendance record despite the absence of numerous regular attendees.

Student-athletes for Red Flash women’s basketball team, women’s swim team, women’s golf team, and men’s hoops squad can usually be seen in the stands supporting their peers on the gridiron, but none were part of the record 2,361 fans on hand at DeGol Field on September 24.

The reason why?

Potatofest in nearby Ebensburg, PA, or as Dan Quayle calls it Potatoe-fest.

The annual event is dedicated to celebrating the potato crop and potato growers in Pennsylvania’s Cambria County.

A number of hands are needed to pull off the fun-filled festival of arts, crafts, entertainment, and food for the entire family.

The members of the aforementioned SFPA athletic teams extended their hands in service to the local community.

The women’s hoopsters were the first team at the event, helping run one of the many tents set up around the fairgrounds. The women’s golf and swim teams relieved the women’s basketball squad, and the men’s basketball team arrived late in the evening to handle cleanup duties.

Luckily for those Red Flash football fans who missed the Duquesne game due to the 20th annual Potatofest, the SFPA gridders will play at home again this weekend, Oct. 1 when they host NEC foe Albany at 1:00 pm.
